Ingredient Spotlight: Tips and Substitution Suggestions
Understanding each component is key to mastering these sliders. Here’s a closer look at the stars of the show and how you can customize them to your liking:
- BUNS: For these sliders, we highly recommend Kings Hawaiian slider buns. Their characteristic sweetness and incredibly soft, fluffy texture beautifully complement the savory beef and cheese, adding an extra layer of deliciousness. A 9-pack is usually just right for a batch, but a 12-pack of regular slider buns will work equally well. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to truly impress, consider making our homemade Hawaiian rolls from scratch for an unparalleled level of freshness and flavor. The goal is a bun that’s soft enough to absorb the flavors without getting soggy, and sturdy enough to hold its generous filling.
- CHEESE: The magic of a cheesesteak often lies in its gooey, melted cheese. We’ve chosen Tostitos brand Queso Blanco dip for its creamy texture and mild, yet flavorful, kick. This adds a fantastic foundational layer of melty goodness. However, feel free to experiment with any queso or cheese sauce you prefer. Alongside the queso, slices of provolone cheese are essential. Provolone offers that classic, slightly sharp, and wonderfully stretchy melt that defines a traditional Philly cheesesteak. For those who enjoy variety, other excellent cheese options include white American cheese for a super creamy texture, or even a mild cheddar or mozzarella for a different flavor profile.
- BEEF: The heart of any cheesesteak is the beef, and for sliders, shaved steak is paramount. This cut, often labeled as “shaved beef,” “chip steak,” or “sandwich steak,” is incredibly thin, allowing it to cook quickly and become wonderfully tender. Its thinness also helps it integrate perfectly with the cheese and peppers, preventing any tough or chewy bites. You can often find pre-shaved beef in the meat section of your grocery store (we used this type). If you can’t find shaved steak, you can buy thinly sliced sirloin or ribeye and slice it even thinner yourself, or ask your butcher to do it. The key is to have the beef as thinly sliced as possible for that authentic cheesesteak experience.
- PEPPERS & ONIONS (Optional): Our recipe highlights red and green bell peppers for their vibrant color and mild, sweet crunch, which perfectly balances the richness of the beef and cheese. Julienne them thinly so they soften quickly and blend seamlessly into the filling. For an even more classic Philly cheesesteak flavor, consider adding thinly sliced yellow or white onions. Sauté them with the bell peppers until they are beautifully caramelized and tender, adding a depth of savory sweetness that is simply irresistible.
How to Make Philly Cheesesteak Sliders: A Step-by-Step Guide
These step-by-step photos and detailed instructions are here to help you visualize and execute this recipe flawlessly. For a concise, printable version of this recipe, complete with precise measurements and instructions, scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- **Prepare Your Oven:** Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures your sliders bake evenly and achieve that perfect golden-brown finish.
- **Slice the Buns:** If your slider buns are not already pre-cut, carefully slice them horizontally in half using a serrated knife. Gently place the bottom halves of the buns onto a large baking sheet. Arranging them closely together on the sheet will help create a unified “pull-apart” effect, making serving a breeze.
- **Heat the Skillet:** In a large skillet or cast iron pan, heat two tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat until it shimmers. A hot skillet is crucial for achieving a good sear on the beef and tenderizing the peppers.
- **Cook the Shaved Beef:** Add the shaved beef to the hot skillet. Cook, using tongs to turn and break up the meat occasionally, until it is completely browned and no pink remains. The thinness of the beef means it will cook quickly, usually within 5-7 minutes. Avoid overcrowding the pan; cook in batches if necessary to ensure the beef sears rather than steams.
- **Season the Beef:** Once the beef is browned, season it generously with garlic salt and black pepper to taste. These simple seasonings enhance the savory notes of the meat and form the flavor base for your sliders.
- **Sauté the Peppers:** Push all the cooked beef to one side of the skillet. Add your julienned bell pepper strips (and sliced onions, if using) to the other side. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the peppers have softened and become tender-crisp, about 5-8 minutes. You want them tender but still with a slight bite.
- **Integrate the Queso:** Pour the queso blanco dip directly into the pan with the beef and peppers. Stir everything together until the queso is fully combined and heated through, creating a wonderfully creamy and cheesy mixture that will bind your slider filling.

- **Assemble the Sliders:** Using tongs, generously portion the hot beef and pepper mixture onto the bottom halves of the slider buns. Don’t be shy – pile the meat on pretty thick! This is a cheesesteak, after all, and a hearty filling is key. Spread the mixture evenly across all the buns.
- **Add Provolone:** Lay slices of provolone cheese directly on top of the beef and pepper mixture. The provolone will melt beautifully in the oven, creating that iconic stretchy, gooey layer.
- **Top and Butter:** Carefully place the top halves of the slider buns back onto their bottoms. Brush the tops of the buns liberally with melted butter. This butter bath will ensure the buns turn golden brown and delicious during baking. You can also sprinkle with a little garlic powder or sesame seeds for extra flavor and visual appeal.
- **Bake to Perfection:** Transfer the baking sheet with the assembled sliders into your preheated oven. Bake for approximately 20 minutes, or until the buns are beautifully golden brown and the cheese is fully melted and bubbly. This final bake brings all the flavors together and warms the sliders through.
Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips for Philly Cheesesteak Sliders
Absolutely! These sliders are excellent for meal prep. You can cook the beef and peppers mixture entirely ahead of time. Allow it to cool completely, then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. When you’re ready to serve, simply reheat the mixture gently on the stovetop, then assemble the sliders as directed in the recipe, and pop them into the oven to bake. This pre-prepping makes entertaining a breeze!
Store any leftover Philly cheesesteak sliders in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. To reheat them, the best method is to place the sliders on a baking sheet or baking pan and cover them loosely with aluminum foil. Bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until they are thoroughly warmed through and the cheese is melty again. The foil helps prevent the buns from drying out. Avoid microwaving if possible, as it can make the buns soggy.
For authentic Philly cheesesteak flavor and texture, very thinly sliced beef is crucial. Look for “shaved steak,” “chip steak,” or “sandwich steak” at your grocery store. These cuts are designed to cook quickly and become incredibly tender. If you can’t find them, ask your butcher to thinly slice ribeye, top round, or sirloin against the grain. You can also partially freeze a steak for about 30 minutes, then slice it thinly yourself at home.
Absolutely! While bell peppers are included, thinly sliced yellow or white onions are a classic addition to any cheesesteak. Sauté them alongside the bell peppers until they are soft and caramelized for an extra layer of savory sweetness. Mushrooms, finely chopped jalapeños for a kick, or even a touch of spinach could also be interesting additions, though they would depart slightly from the traditional flavor profile.
The combination of queso blanco and provolone in this recipe already provides an excellent melty texture. To maximize the gooeyness, make sure your oven is fully preheated. Covering the sliders loosely with aluminum foil for the first 10-15 minutes of baking can help steam the cheese and ensure it melts thoroughly before the buns get too brown. Then, remove the foil for the last few minutes to get that perfect golden crust on top.
When cooking the shaved beef and peppers, it’s tempting to throw everything in at once. However, overcrowding the skillet will lower the pan’s temperature and cause the ingredients to steam rather than sear and brown. Work in batches if necessary, especially with the beef, to ensure a delicious, caramelized crust and tender vegetables.
To save time and ensure even cuts, keep the slider buns connected when slicing them. Use a long, serrated knife to cut through the entire block of buns horizontally. This creates perfect top and bottom halves that fit together seamlessly, making assembly much quicker and tidier.

Perfect Pairings: What to Serve with Philly Cheesesteak Sliders
While these Philly cheesesteak sliders are incredibly satisfying on their own, pairing them with the right side dishes can elevate your meal or party spread. Here are some fantastic suggestions:
- **Classic Sides:** You can’t go wrong with classic American comfort food. Think crispy French fries, golden brown tater tots, or crunchy onion rings. Their salty, crispy texture offers a wonderful contrast to the rich, soft sliders.
- **Fresh & Zesty Options:** To cut through the richness, offer lighter, tangy sides. A fresh green salad with a vinaigrette dressing, a classic creamy coleslaw, or a bright pasta salad would be excellent choices. These add a refreshing element that balances the meal.
- **Hearty Choices:** For a more substantial meal, consider serving your sliders with baked beans, potato salad, or even a hearty vegetable soup. These options will make your sliders feel like a complete dinner, perfect for colder evenings or very hungry guests.
- **Dipping Sauces:** Although the sliders are packed with flavor, a side of extra queso, a tangy ketchup, or a spicy sriracha mayo can add another dimension for dipping enthusiasts.

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
