Why Frosty Orange Dream Squares Are Your New Favorite Summer Dessert

While these Frosty Orange Dream Squares are undeniably delicious, their icy nature means they’re best enjoyed right from your freezer. Hauling them to an outdoor barbecue might pose a challenge, but if you’re hosting friends and family at your place, this dessert is an absolute must-try! Its vibrant flavor and cool texture make it the ideal grand finale for any home-based gathering, offering a refreshing contrast to grilled foods and summer salads.

What makes this dessert so special? It’s the delightful combination of textures and flavors. You have the crunchy, buttery crust providing a satisfying foundation, followed by layers of creamy, sweet vanilla pudding and tangy, refreshing orange sherbet, all lightened with fluffy whipped topping. Each bite is a symphony for the senses, delivering a nostalgic taste that appeals to all ages. It’s a simple recipe that yields impressive results, making you look like a culinary star without spending hours in the kitchen.

Beyond its incredible taste, this dessert offers unparalleled convenience. It’s a no-bake wonder, meaning you won’t have to turn on your oven during sweltering summer days. Prepare it ahead of time, let it firm up in the freezer, and simply pull it out when you’re ready to serve. This “make-ahead” aspect makes it perfect for entertaining, allowing you to focus on your guests rather than last-minute preparations. Whether it’s a casual weeknight treat or a festive celebration, Frosty Orange Dream Squares are designed for ease and enjoyment.

The Simple Ingredients Behind This Dreamy Creation

The magic of these Frosty Orange Dream Squares lies in their straightforward ingredients. You’ll need a base of crushed Nilla Wafers for the crust, paired with melted butter to bind them. The creamy layers are crafted from instant vanilla pudding mix, cold milk, a generous amount of whipped topping (like Cool Whip), and the star of the show: softened orange sherbet. Each component plays a crucial role in creating the signature taste and texture that makes this dessert so irresistible.

A Note on the Crust: Nilla Wafers vs. Graham Crackers

The original recipe calls for a classic Nilla Wafer crust, which provides a delicate vanilla flavor and a satisfying crunch. However, if you’re looking for an alternative or simply prefer a different profile, graham crackers make an excellent substitute. And here’s a little secret for you: vanilla-flavored graham crackers exist! Yes, it’s true! I’ve seen them at the grocery store, and they offer a fantastic twist that complements the orange and vanilla layers beautifully. Feel free to experiment with either option; both will create a delicious base for your frosty squares.

This recipe is not just about following instructions; it’s about creating moments of joy. I hope you enjoy making and devouring these Frosty Orange Dream Squares as much as my family and I do. They truly are a delightful escape on a hot day!

What You’ll Need: Essential Ingredients

  • 40 NILLA Wafers, finely crushed (about 1-1/2 cups)
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 2 pkg. (4-serving size each) JELL-O Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding (instant vanilla flavor)
  • 1 tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed, divided
  • 2 cups orange sherbet, softened

Helpful Kitchen Tools for Easy Preparation

  • 13×9-inch pan with lid (essential for freezing and storage)
  • Aluminum foil (for easy removal)
  • Measuring cups
  • Wire whisk
  • Cutting board and knife (for cutting into squares)

Tips for Success and Variations

Achieving the perfect Frosty Orange Dream Squares is simple with a few helpful tips:

  • Softened Sherbet: Ensure your orange sherbet is softened enough to be easily whisked but not completely melted. This allows it to blend smoothly with the whipped topping without becoming liquidy.
  • Chill Time is Key: Don’t rush the refrigeration and freezing steps. The chilling time for the pudding layer helps it set, and the freezing time ensures the squares are firm enough to cut cleanly.
  • Foil Sling: The foil lining extending over the sides of the pan acts as a “sling,” making it incredibly easy to lift the entire dessert out of the pan before slicing. This is crucial for neat, beautiful squares.
  • Crust Variations: Beyond Nilla Wafers and graham crackers, consider using shortbread cookies or even ginger snaps for a different flavor dimension.
  • Flavor Twists: While orange is classic, feel free to experiment with other sherbet flavors like rainbow, lime, or raspberry for different “dream” dessert experiences.
  • Garnish Ideas: A sprinkle of fresh orange zest, a few mint leaves, or a dollop of extra whipped cream can elevate the presentation.
  • Make Ahead: This dessert is a fantastic make-ahead option. Prepare it a day or two in advance and keep it in the freezer until needed.

Ingredients

  • 40 cookies vanilla wafers finely crushed (about 1-1/2 cups)
  • ¼ cup butter melted
  • 6.8 ounces JELL-O Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding 2 pkg. (3.4 oz. each)
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 8 ounces Cool Whip thawed, divided
  • 2 cups orange sherbet, softened

Instructions

  1. Line a 13×9-inch pan with aluminum foil, ensuring the ends of the foil extend over the sides. In a medium bowl, combine the finely crushed vanilla wafer crumbs and melted butter. Press this mixture firmly onto the bottom of the prepared pan to form an even crust.

  2. In a separate medium bowl, beat the instant pudding mixes and cold milk with a whisk for 2 minutes, or until the pudding begins to thicken. Gently stir in half of the thawed Cool Whip until just combined. Carefully spoon this pudding mixture over the prepared crust in the pan. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes to allow the pudding layer to set slightly.

  3. While the pudding chills, add the remaining Cool Whip to the softened orange sherbet in another bowl. Whisk until the mixture is well blended and smooth. Spoon this sherbet and Cool Whip mixture evenly over the chilled pudding layer in the pan.

  4. Place the pan in the freezer and freeze for a minimum of 3 hours, or until the dessert is completely firm. When ready to serve, use the foil handles to carefully lift the entire frozen dessert from the pan. Place it on a cutting board, then slice into squares with a sharp knife. Serve immediately and enjoy!

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
