Why This Recipe Works: The Magic of Air Frying Sweet Potatoes

This recipe for air fryer sweet potato fries isn’t just easy; it’s a game-changer for anyone seeking a healthier lifestyle without sacrificing flavor or texture. With just four basic ingredients – fresh sweet potatoes, a touch of olive oil, salt, and pepper – you can create a side dish or snack that rivals its deep-fried counterparts in crispiness and taste. The brilliance lies in the air fryer itself.

An air fryer is essentially a compact convection oven, circulating hot air around your food to create a crispy exterior without submerging it in oil. This significantly reduces the fat content, making these sweet potato fries a far healthier choice compared to traditional deep-frying. Not only does this benefit your health, but it also means no greasy oil to clean up afterward, simplifying your cooking experience. The high-speed circulation of hot air ensures even cooking and a delightful crunch that’s hard to achieve with conventional baking methods, especially in such a short timeframe.

Beyond being a healthier option, this recipe excels in convenience. These fries are quick enough to whip up as an impromptu snack, a last-minute side dish for dinner, or even as a vibrant addition to meal prep. You can easily adapt the recipe to create air fryer sweet potato chips by adjusting the slice thickness and cook time, or opt for a traditional oven method with our baked sweet potato fries recipe if an air fryer isn’t available. The versatility of sweet potatoes combined with the efficiency of air frying makes this a go-to recipe for any occasion.

Ingredient Info and Substitution Suggestions for Optimal Flavor

Each ingredient plays a crucial role in achieving the desired texture and taste of your air fryer sweet potato fries. Here’s a deeper dive into making the best choices and exploring potential substitutions.

SWEET POTATOES: The star of our recipe! We highly recommend using Jewel sweet potatoes for their ideal balance of firmness and inherent sweetness, which makes them perfectly suited for fries. When selecting sweet potatoes, look for ones that are firm to the touch, medium in size, and free from any soft spots, blemishes, or sprouts. These indicators ensure freshness and optimal flavor. Medium-sized potatoes are generally easier to handle and cut into uniform sticks, which is crucial for even cooking. For different flavor profiles, you could experiment with other varieties like Japanese sweet potatoes (drier, less sweet) or Hannah sweet potatoes (paler, milder flavor), but adjust cooking times accordingly as their moisture content can vary.

OIL: A small amount of oil is essential for helping the fries crisp up and to ensure the seasonings adhere properly. We use olive oil for its rich flavor and heart-healthy properties. However, you can easily swap it out for other high-heat cooking oils that are suitable for air frying, such as vegetable oil, avocado oil (known for its neutral flavor and high smoke point), canola oil, or grapeseed oil. These oils distribute heat evenly and contribute to that coveted crispy exterior. While some recipes suggest making sweet potato fries completely oil-free, a little oil goes a long way in achieving that truly satisfying crunch and preventing them from drying out.

SEASONINGS: Sweet potatoes have such a wonderful natural flavor that they don’t require an extensive spice cabinet. A simple combination of salt and pepper is often all you need to elevate them. However, this is where you can truly customize your fries to your liking! For salt, choose your favorite: regular table salt, sea salt, or Kosher salt all work wonderfully. We enjoy a gourmet touch with a combination of pink Himalayan salt for its mineral notes and truffle salt for an earthy, luxurious aroma. Beyond these, consider adding a pinch of garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika for a smoky depth, or a touch of cayenne pepper for a subtle kick. For a sweeter profile, a sprinkle of cinnamon or a mix of cinnamon and nutmeg can transform them into a dessert-like treat. Freshly ground black pepper is always recommended for the best flavor.

How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries: Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these simple steps to create perfectly crispy and tender air fryer sweet potato fries. For a printable version of this recipe, complete with precise measurements and instructions, please refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. Preheat Your Air Fryer: Begin by preheating your air fryer to 380°F (193°C). Preheating is a crucial step that ensures your fries start cooking immediately upon entering the basket, leading to a crispier result.
  2. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Carefully peel the sweet potatoes using a vegetable peeler. Once peeled, cut them into uniform sticks, approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and about 3-4 inches long. Consistency in size is key for even cooking. Place all the cut sweet potato sticks into a large mixing bowl.

  3. Prepare the Oil and Seasoning Mixture: In a small separate bowl, combine the olive oil, salt, and pepper. Whisk these ingredients together thoroughly until well combined. This ensures an even distribution of flavor.
Adding olive oil to a bowl with salt and pepper, preparing the seasoning mixture.
Whisking the oil, salt, and pepper mixture in a small bowl until fully combined.
  4. Coat the Sweet Potatoes: Pour the whisked olive oil mixture evenly over the sweet potato sticks in the large bowl. Using gloves or a spoon, gently toss the potatoes until every stick is thoroughly coated with the oil and seasonings. Ensure no dry spots remain for optimal crispiness and flavor.

  5. Load the Air Fryer Basket: Arrange the seasoned sweet potato sticks in a single layer in your preheated air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding the basket, as this is critical for achieving maximum crispiness. If necessary, cook in batches.

EXPERT TIP: While it might be tempting to cook all the fries at once, overcrowding the air fryer basket can lead to steamed, limp potatoes rather than crispy ones. The air fryer relies on proper air circulation for its magic. For truly crispy fries, cook them in a single layer. However, if you prefer a slightly softer fry with a bit less crunch, you can load the basket a little more, as we did in our photos. The taste will still be fabulous; it simply comes down to your preferred texture.

  6. Air Fry to Perfection: Air fry the sweet potato fries at 380°F (193°C) for 7 minutes. After this initial cooking time, carefully shake the basket to redistribute the fries and promote even browning. Continue air frying for an additional 7-8 minutes, or until the fries are golden brown and crispy to your liking. Repeat this process for any remaining batches.

Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips for Success

Achieving perfectly crispy sweet potato fries in your air fryer is simple with a few helpful pointers. Here are answers to common questions and additional expert tips to ensure your fries turn out delicious every time.

Why aren’t my sweet potato fries getting crispy?

The most common reason sweet potato fries don’t get crispy in the air fryer is overcrowding the basket. An air fryer works by circulating hot air around the food. If the basket is too full, the air can’t circulate effectively, which causes the fries to steam instead of crisp up. To fix this, ensure you’re cooking them in a single layer, allowing enough space between each fry. If your batch is large, cook them in multiple smaller batches. Giving them a good shake halfway through also helps with even crisping. You might also consider patting the potato sticks very dry before tossing with oil, as excess moisture can hinder crispiness.

How do you store and reheat sweet potato fries?

Allow any leftover sweet potato fries to cool completely to room temperature before storing. Place them in an airtight container and refrigerate for 3-4 days. To reheat and bring back some of their crispiness, simply place them back in your air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes, or until heated through and crisp. Avoid reheating them in the microwave, as this will likely make them soggy.

Can I use frozen sweet potato fries in the air fryer?

Absolutely! Frozen sweet potato fries are a convenient option. There’s usually no need to thaw them beforehand. Simply follow the package instructions for air frying, or place them in a single layer in your preheated air fryer at 400°F (200°C) and cook for 15-20 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Adjust cooking time based on the thickness of the fries and your air fryer model. They often come pre-seasoned, but you can always add more to taste after cooking.

Are sweet potato fries healthy?

When made in an air fryer with minimal oil, sweet potato fries are a significantly healthier option than their deep-fried counterparts. Sweet potatoes are packed with nutrients, including high levels of Vitamin A (beta-carotene), Vitamin C, and Manganese. They are also a good source of fiber, which aids digestion and can help regulate blood sugar. Their natural sweetness means you often don’t need additional sugars, making them a nutritious and delicious choice.

Should I soak sweet potatoes before air frying?

While not strictly necessary for this recipe, soaking sweet potato sticks in cold water for 30 minutes to an hour can help remove excess starch, potentially leading to an even crispier fry. If you choose to soak them, make sure to thoroughly pat them dry with paper towels before tossing with oil and seasoning. Any residual moisture will hinder crisping.

  • black pepper to taste

  • salt to taste. We used a combination of pink Himalayan and truffle salt

  • Vegetable peeler
  • Vinyl gloves

Before You Begin

  • We are using olive oil but you can swap it out with another high-heat oil like vegetable, avocado, canola, or grapeseed oil.
  • Sweet potatoes don’t need much more than some salt and pepper. You can choose your favorite flavored salt, regular table salt, sea salt, or Kosher salt to sprinkle them with. We use a combination of pink Himalayan and truffle salt.
  • We like to use Jewel sweet potatoes when making fries. They’re firm but sweet, perfectly suited for making fries. Choose firm, medium sized sweet potatoes that are free of soft spots or sprouts.
  • Store cooled leftovers in an air-tight container kept in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat them in the air fryer using the reheat function.
  • The air fryer relies on proper air circulation to evenly cook the food that’s inside, otherwise, it ends up steaming your food instead of baking it. Try removing some of the fries from the basket if they aren’t crisping up, allowing space between some of the fries. Then give them a few extra minutes to crisp.

Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer to 380 F.
  • Peel the sweet potatoes and cut into sticks. Place into a large bowl.
  • Combine the olive oil, salt, and pepper in a small bowl and whisk to combine.
  • Pour the olive oil mixture over the potatoes in the bowl. Using gloved hands, toss to coat all the potatoes.
  • Add a single layer of potato sticks to the air fryer basket.
  • Air fry at 380 F for 7 minutes. Shake the basket and air fry for an additional 7-8 minutes. Repeat for remaining fries.

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
