Essential Ingredients for Your Green Monsters
Creating these adorable Frankenstein Rice Krispie Treats requires a handful of common ingredients, easily found at your local grocery store. For precise measurements and detailed instructions, refer to the full printable recipe card at the end of this post. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need to gather:

Ingredient Information and Smart Substitutions
Understanding each ingredient’s role and potential substitutions can help ensure your Frankenstein treats turn out perfectly, even if you need to make a few adjustments.
For the Rice Krispie Base:
- Rice Krispies Cereal: The star of the show! While the Kellogg’s brand is classic, any generic “crisped rice” cereal will work wonderfully. Just ensure it’s fresh for optimal crispiness.
- Mini Marshmallows: These are crucial for the gooey, chewy texture. They melt more evenly and quickly than large marshmallows.
- Unsalted Butter: Adds richness and helps prevent the marshmallows from sticking. Unsalted butter allows you to control the overall saltiness of the treats. If you only have salted butter, you can omit the added salt from the recipe.
- Vanilla Extract: A touch of vanilla enhances the flavor profile, adding a subtle warmth.
- Salt: A pinch of salt balances the sweetness of the marshmallows and vanilla, elevating the overall taste.
- Green Gel Food Coloring: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! This is key to achieving that vibrant, iconic Frankenstein green. Gel food coloring is far more concentrated than liquid food coloring, meaning you’ll need less of it to get an intense color without watering down your marshmallow mixture. Liquid food coloring can also alter the texture of the treats if too much is used.
For the Spooky Decorations:
- Mini Marshmallows (for “Ears”): These small marshmallows are perfect for creating Frankenstein’s signature neck bolts or “ears.”
- Edible Silver Glitter Spray: This optional but fun addition gives the “ears” a metallic, bolt-like sheen. If you prefer to skip it, the marshmallows will still look great.
- Black Candy Melts: Used to create Frankenstein’s iconic hair. Candy melts are specifically designed to melt smoothly and set firm, providing a clean, professional finish.
- Candy Eyeballs: These instantly bring your monsters to life, adding a playful and slightly eerie touch. You can find them in most baking aisles or craft stores, especially around Halloween.
- Black Decorating Icing (or Gel): This is your artistic tool for drawing mouths and acting as “glue” for the candy eyeballs and marshmallow “ears.” A tube of ready-to-use black frosting with a small tip is ideal for detailed work.
Substitution Suggestions for Decorations:
- “Ears” Alternatives: Instead of mini marshmallows, you could use small pretzel sticks for a more rustic, bolt-like appearance, or even green or silver chocolate-covered pretzel bits.
- Hair Alternatives: If black candy melts are hard to find, you can use melted dark chocolate chips. Just be aware that melted chocolate might be a bit softer and take longer to set compared to candy melts.
- Icing Alternatives: While black decorating icing is easiest, you can also make your own black royal icing or use a black food-grade marker for finer details on a completely set candy melt “hair” layer.
Crafting Your Frankenstein Rice Krispie Treats: A Step-by-Step Guide
These step-by-step photos and instructions are here to help you visualize how to make this recipe successfully. You can Jump to Recipe to get the printable version of this recipe, complete with precise measurements and instructions at the bottom.
- Prepare Your Baking Dish: Begin by lining an 8×8-inch baking dish with two pieces of parchment paper. Arrange the paper so that it hangs over all four sides, creating convenient “handles” to easily lift your treats out later. Lightly spray the parchment paper with coconut oil spray or a neutral cooking spray to prevent sticking. This preparation step is crucial for effortless removal and clean cuts.
- Melt the Butter: In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once the butter is melted and slightly bubbling, reduce the heat to low. This low heat is important to prevent scorching the marshmallows.
- Introduce the Marshmallows: Add the mini marshmallows to the saucepan. Stir continuously with a spatula or wooden spoon. Continue cooking until the marshmallows are almost, but not quite, fully melted. They should be mostly gooey with a few small lumps still visible. This process usually takes about 30 seconds. Be careful not to overheat the marshmallows, as this can make your finished treats hard and difficult to chew.
- Flavor and Color Infusion: Remove the saucepan from the heat immediately. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt. Now, add the green gel food coloring. Stir vigorously until the color is evenly distributed and the marshmallow mixture is a vibrant, uniform green.
- Combine with Cereal: Add the rice krispies cereal to the green marshmallow mixture. Fold gently but thoroughly until all the cereal is well-coated in the sticky, green goodness. Work quickly as the mixture will start to cool and become less pliable.
- Press into Pan: Pour the entire cereal mixture into your prepared 8×8-inch baking pan. To spread it out into an even layer without crushing the cereal, lightly spray a thin metal spatula (or the back of a spoon) with coconut oil spray. Gently press the mixture down, ensuring it’s packed firmly and uniformly into the pan.
- Cool and Cut: Allow the rice krispie treats to cool completely at room temperature. This usually takes about an hour. Once cooled and firm, use the parchment paper overhangs to lift the slab out of the pan. Place it on a cutting board and cut it into 6 equal rectangular pieces. A sharp, oiled knife can help achieve cleaner cuts.
- Prepare Marshmallow “Ears”: For decorating, gently spray the 12 mini marshmallows with edible silver glitter spray. This gives them a metallic, bolt-like appearance. Let them dry briefly.
- Melt Black Candy Melts: Melt the black candy melts. You can do this in a double-boiler for gentle, even melting, or in a microwave-safe bowl. If using a microwave, heat in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each, until smooth and fully melted. Be careful not to overheat, as candy melts can seize.
- Dip for Hair: Dip the top inch or so of each green rice krispie treat into the melted black candy. This will create Frankenstein’s hair. Allow any excess candy to drip off, then place each dipped treat on a parchment-lined baking tray to set.
- Add Eyes: Once the black candy melt “hair” has set, use a dab of black decorating frosting as “glue” to attach two candy eyeballs to each Frankenstein’s face. Press gently to secure.
- Draw the Mouth: With the black decorating frosting, carefully draw a zig-zag or stitched mouth onto each face, giving your Frankensteins their characteristic spooky grin.
- Attach “Ears”: Finally, use another small dab of black frosting as glue to stick one glitter-sprayed mini marshmallow on each side of the Frankenstein’s face, creating the iconic “neck bolts.”
- Set and Serve: Allow all the frosting to set completely, which may take about 15-30 minutes, depending on your frosting type and humidity. Once set, your delightful Frankenstein Rice Krispie Treats are ready to be served and enjoyed!

Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips for Perfection
To maintain their delightful soft and chewy texture, it’s essential to store your Frankenstein Rice Krispie Treats properly. Place them in an airtight container at room temperature. Avoid refrigerating them, as the cold air can make them hard and stale quickly. When stored correctly, these treats will remain fresh and delicious for approximately 2-3 days. If you plan to make them ahead for an event, we recommend preparing them no more than one day in advance for optimal freshness.
Expert Tips for the Best Frankenstein Treats:
- The Marshmallow Melt Matters: The most crucial step for perfect Rice Krispie treats is melting the marshmallows. Overheating them can lead to a hard, brittle texture once cooled. Aim for “almost melted” – remove them from the heat when there are still a few small lumps, as residual heat will finish the melting process as you stir.
- Don’t Over-Compress: When pressing the mixture into the pan, be gentle. Too much pressure can result in dense, hard treats. Lightly spray your spatula with cooking spray and gently pat the mixture down to an even layer.
- Quality Food Coloring: As mentioned, green gel food coloring is a game-changer. It provides intense color without adding excess liquid, preserving the treat’s texture. A little goes a long way!
- Clean Cuts: For neat Frankenstein shapes, allow the treats to cool completely before cutting. For extra clean slices, use a sharp knife lightly coated with cooking spray or dipped in hot water (wiped dry) between cuts.
- Let Decorations Set: Patience is key when decorating. Ensure the black candy melt “hair” is fully set before adding eyes and mouths, otherwise, they might smudge. Similarly, let the frosting set before stacking or serving to prevent smearing.
- Kid Involvement: This is a fantastic recipe for involving little helpers. Let them stir the cereal into the marshmallow mixture (under supervision), press it into the pan, and especially have fun decorating the faces.
- Temperature Control for Candy Melts: If your candy melts start to thicken while dipping, gently reheat them in the microwave for 10-15 seconds, stirring well. Avoid overheating to prevent them from seizing.

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
