Why This Air Fryer Churros Recipe is a Game Changer
Churros are a beloved treat enjoyed worldwide, but traditional preparation often involves deep-frying in hot oil, which can be messy, time-consuming, and less healthy. This innovative air fryer method transforms your favorite cinnamon sugar indulgence into a guilt-free pleasure. By utilizing the circulating hot air of an air fryer, we achieve that desirable crispy exterior and soft interior with significantly less fat.
The benefits extend beyond just health. Say goodbye to splattering oil, cumbersome cleanup, and the lingering smell of fried food in your kitchen. The air fryer streamlines the cooking process, making homemade churros accessible for any occasion. Whether you’re hosting a Cinco De Mayo celebration, a casual football party, or simply looking for a fantastic dessert to cap off your taco Tuesday, these air-fried churros are the perfect solution. Serve them warm with a selection of dipping sauces like rich caramel, classic chocolate, dulce de leche, or creamy Nutella for an unforgettable treat.

Essential Ingredients You Will Need for Air Fryer Churros
Creating these delightful air fryer churros requires a few basic pantry staples. The magic lies in how these simple ingredients come together to form the perfect choux pastry dough and a tantalizing cinnamon-sugar coating. You can find all specific measurements and detailed instructions in the printable recipe card at the end of this post.

The Heart of the Churro: Choux Pastry Dough
The foundation of any great churro is a well-made choux pastry, also known as Pâte à Choux dough. This versatile dough is famously used to create many exquisite pastries, including light-as-air cream puffs and delicate eclairs, much like those in our popular cream puff chocolate eclair cake! The beauty of choux pastry lies in its ability to puff up and become hollow when cooked, creating that signature airy interior essential for churros.
- Water: The liquid base for the dough, which turns into steam during cooking to create the hollow center.
- Unsalted Butter: Adds richness and helps create a tender crumb. Using unsalted butter allows you to control the overall saltiness of the dough.
- Granulated Sugar & a Pinch of Salt: A touch of sugar enhances the flavor, while salt balances the sweetness and brings out the other ingredients.
- All-Purpose Flour: Provides the structure for the dough. It’s crucial to add it all at once and mix vigorously to ensure proper gluten development and absorption of the liquid.
- Eggs: The eggs are perhaps the most critical ingredient in choux pastry. They emulsify the mixture, add richness, and provide the necessary moisture and leavening (through steam) that allows the churros to puff up beautifully in the air fryer. The number of eggs can vary slightly depending on their size and the flour’s absorption, but generally, three large eggs work perfectly for this recipe.
The Irresistible Cinnamon Sugar Coating
No churro is complete without its signature sweet and aromatic coating. This simple mix transforms warm, plain churros into a flavor explosion:
- Granulated Sugar: Forms the sweet base of the coating.
- Ground Cinnamon: Adds the characteristic warm, spicy aroma and flavor that defines churros.
Dipping Sauces (Optional, but Highly Recommended!)
While delicious on their own, churros truly shine when paired with a dipping sauce. Get creative with your choices:
- Classic Chocolate Sauce: A timeless favorite that perfectly complements the cinnamon.
- Caramel Sauce: Adds a rich, buttery sweetness.
- Dulce de Leche: A creamy, milk-based caramel for an authentic touch.
- Nutella: A hazelnut-chocolate spread for a decadent twist.
How to Craft Perfect Air Fryer Churros: Step-by-Step Guide
Making churros might seem intimidating, but with an air fryer, it’s simpler than you think! Follow these detailed steps to achieve churro perfection. These photos and instructions are here to guide you visually. For a printable version of this recipe with exact measurements, simply scroll down to the dedicated recipe card below.
- Prepare Your Baking Surface: Lay a piece of parchment paper on a large cookie sheet. Lightly spray the parchment paper with cooking spray. This will prevent the churro dough from sticking later.
- Initiate the Dough Base: In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the water, unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally until the butter is completely melted and the mixture comes to a full, rolling boil.
- Incorporate the Flour: Once the mixture boils, reduce the heat to low. Add all the all-purpose flour at once. Using a sturdy wooden spoon, mix continuously and vigorously. The dough will quickly come together, forming a smooth ball that pulls away from the sides of the pan. Continue stirring for another minute or two to cook out some of the moisture from the flour.

- Cool and Add Eggs: Remove the saucepan from the heat. Allow the dough to cool for approximately 5 minutes. This cooling step is crucial; if the dough is too hot, the eggs will scramble. After cooling, add the eggs one at a time, whisking vigorously after each addition until the mixture becomes smooth and completely lump-free. The dough will appear sticky at this stage, which is perfectly normal for choux pastry.
Expert Tip: For quicker and easier mixing, especially when adding the eggs, you can transfer the warm dough to a mixing bowl and use an electric hand mixer. This ensures a thoroughly combined and smooth dough.
- Prepare for Piping: Transfer the sticky churro dough into a sturdy piping bag that has been fitted with a closed star tip. The star tip is essential for giving churros their traditional ridges, which also help create extra crispy edges in the air fryer.
- Pipe and Chill: Pipe the churro dough into uniform 4-inch lengths onto the prepared parchment-lined cookie sheet. Once all the dough is piped, transfer the cookie sheet to the freezer for about 30 minutes. Chilling the dough helps it firm up, making it much easier to handle and ensuring the churros maintain their shape during air frying.
- Preheat Your Air Fryer: While the dough chills, spray the basket of your Air Fryer with cooking spray. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Preheating ensures even cooking and a crisper texture.
- Air Fry the Churros: Carefully transfer the chilled churro dough pieces into the preheated air fryer basket. Arrange them in a single layer, ensuring there is enough space between each churro for optimal air circulation. Cook for 8-10 minutes, or until the churros are beautifully golden brown and crispy.
Expert Tip: Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Overlapping churros will steam instead of crisp, leading to a soggy texture. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook the churros in multiple batches to achieve the best results.
- Prepare Cinnamon Sugar Coating: While the churros are air frying, in a medium shallow bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon. Mix them thoroughly until well combined.
- Coat Immediately: As soon as the churros are done and come out of the air fryer, immediately toss them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture. The residual heat from the churros will help the coating adhere perfectly.
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve your warm, freshly coated air fryer churros with your preferred dipping sauce. They are best enjoyed immediately!
Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Churros
Here are answers to some common questions that arise when making and storing air fryer churros. These tips will help ensure your churro-making experience is smooth and successful.
Can you freeze churro dough?
Absolutely! Freezing churro dough is a fantastic way to prepare ahead of time. To do so, pipe your churro dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, just as you would for immediate cooking, and place it in the freezer for about 30 minutes until the dough is firm. Once firm, you can carefully wrap the individual churro pieces in plastic wrap and then store them in a freezer-safe bag or an airtight container. Frozen churro dough can be kept for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to cook, allow the dough to thaw completely to room temperature before air frying as per the instructions.
Can I make these churros ahead of time?
While churros are undeniably best served fresh and warm straight from the air fryer, you can certainly prepare the dough in advance. You can make the choux pastry dough and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Before piping and air frying, ensure the dough comes back to room temperature. This will help maintain its proper consistency for piping and ensure it cooks evenly.
Why do my churros taste eggy?
An eggy taste in churros is a common issue that often stems from the eggs cooking prematurely. This usually happens if you add the eggs to the dough when it’s still too hot after being cooked on the stovetop. It’s crucial to remove the dough from the heat and allow it to cool for at least 5 minutes (as specified in step 4 of our recipe) before incorporating the eggs. This cooling period prevents the eggs from scrambling or partially cooking, which can impart an undesirable eggy flavor to your finished churros.
How do I reheat churros?
Churros are at their absolute best when served fresh, immediately after air frying and coating. They tend to lose their crispness and can become a bit soggy if left sitting out for an extended period. If you do have leftovers, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, but be aware their texture will change. To revive them, preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and reheat the churros for just 2-3 minutes. This should help restore some of their original crispiness.
How do I ensure my churros are crispy?
Achieving perfectly crispy churros in the air fryer depends on a few factors:
- Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: Air needs to circulate freely around each churro for optimal crisping. Cook in batches if necessary.
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Starting with a hot air fryer helps the churros crisp up immediately upon contact.
- Chill the Dough: Cold dough holds its shape better and crisps more effectively.
- Lightly Spray: A light coating of cooking spray on the churros before air frying can help achieve a golden-brown and crispy finish.

These delicious golden brown, cinnamon-sugar-coated air fryer churros are truly a sweet treat you don’t have to feel guilty about anymore! Enjoy the classic flavors with a modern, healthier twist.

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
