Ingredient Information and Smart Substitutions

To ensure the best possible Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips, understanding your ingredients and potential substitutions is key:

SWEET POTATOES: The star of our show! When selecting sweet potatoes at your grocery store, opt for firm, medium-sized potatoes with smooth skin and minimal bruises or cracks. Medium-sized potatoes are generally easier to handle and slice evenly. Varieties like Beauregard or Jewel are commonly available and work wonderfully for chips, offering a perfect balance of sweetness and starch. Avoid very large or very small potatoes, as consistency can be harder to achieve.

OIL: We recommend using vegetable oil for its neutral flavor and high smoke point, which is crucial for air frying. However, you can easily swap it out with other high-heat oils such as avocado oil, canola oil, or grapeseed oil. These oils can withstand the high temperatures of the air fryer without breaking down and imparting off-flavors. Olive oil typically has a lower smoke point and might not be the best choice for achieving maximum crispness without burning.

SALT & PEPPER: Coarse salt, like sea salt or kosher salt, works best here as it adheres well to the chips and provides a satisfying burst of flavor. Freshly ground black pepper adds a subtle kick. These are your foundational seasonings, but feel free to experiment!

OPTIONAL SEASONINGS: This is where you can truly make the recipe your own. Consider a sprinkle of paprika for a smoky flavor and vibrant color, onion powder or garlic powder for an aromatic depth, or a pinch of chili powder or cayenne pepper if you enjoy a little heat. For a sweeter profile, a dusting of cinnamon or a mix of cinnamon and a tiny bit of brown sugar can be delightful, especially when paired with the natural sweetness of the potato. Italian seasoning, cumin, or even a dash of nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor are also excellent options to explore.

Mastering Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips: Step-by-Step Guide

These step-by-step photos and instructions are here to guide you through making this delicious recipe. For a convenient printable version of this recipe, complete with precise measurements and comprehensive instructions, you can Jump to Recipe at the bottom of this post.

  1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Begin by thoroughly washing your sweet potatoes under cold running water. Use a vegetable brush to scrub away any dirt. Once clean, peel the sweet potatoes completely. This ensures a smooth texture for your chips.
  2. Achieve Uniform Slices: The secret to perfectly crispy and evenly cooked chips lies in uniform slicing. Using a mandolin slicer set to a thin but not paper-thin setting (typically around 1/16 to 1/8 inch) is highly recommended. This tool allows for consistent thickness, which is crucial. If slices are uneven, thinner parts will burn before thicker parts cook through. If you don’t have a mandolin, a very sharp knife and a steady hand can work, but aim for as much consistency as possible.
  3. Soak for Crispiness: Place all the sliced sweet potatoes into a large bowl and cover them completely with cold water. Let them soak for at least 20 minutes. This vital step helps to draw out excess starch from the potatoes. Reducing the starch content is what contributes significantly to achieving that desirable crisp, non-soggy texture once air-fried.
  4. Thoroughly Dry the Slices: After soaking, drain the sweet potato slices completely. Lay them out in a single layer on a clean kitchen towel or several layers of paper towels. Pat them vigorously until they are as dry as possible. Any residual moisture will steam in the air fryer, preventing crisping and potentially leading to soggy chips. Don’t rush this step!
  5. Lightly Oil the Chips: In a clean bowl, lightly brush or toss the dried sweet potato slices with a thin, even coating of vegetable oil (or your chosen high-heat oil). You want just enough oil to help them crisp up and for the seasonings to adhere, but not so much that they become greasy. A light hand is key here.
  6. Season to Perfection: Sprinkle both sides of the oiled sweet potato slices with coarse salt and black pepper. If using any optional spices like paprika, garlic powder, or chili powder, now is the time to add them. Ensure an even distribution of seasonings for maximum flavor in every bite.
  7. Load the Air Fryer Basket: Arrange the seasoned sweet potato slices in a single layer on your air fryer wire rack or within the basket. It is absolutely crucial that the slices do not touch or overlap. Overcrowding the air fryer will obstruct proper air circulation, leading to uneven cooking and steaming instead of crisping. You will need to cook these in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.
  8. Air Fry to Golden Crispness: Cook the sweet potato chips at 250 degrees Fahrenheit (120°C) for 7-8 minutes. Then, carefully flip each chip over using tongs and cook for another 7-8 minutes. Begin checking the chips at the 5-minute mark for each side, especially during the second cooking phase, to prevent overcooking and burning. Sweet potatoes can go from perfectly crisp to burnt very quickly. The exact cooking time may vary slightly depending on your air fryer model and the thickness of your slices. Remove from the air fryer when they are golden brown and perfectly crispy.
  9. Serve and Enjoy: Once cooked, remove the chips from the air fryer and serve them warm immediately for the best taste and texture.

Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips for Perfect Chips

Why do I have to soak the sweet potato slices?

Soaking the sweet potato slices in cold water is a critical step for achieving optimal crispiness. This process helps to extract some of the excess starch from the potatoes. When starches are removed, the chips are less likely to become soggy and instead develop a much crisper texture when cooked. Remember to thoroughly dry the slices after soaking and before coating them with oil and seasonings.

Why is the cooking temperature so low compared to other air fryer recipes?

Through extensive experimentation, we found that a lower cooking temperature of 250°F (120°C) worked best for sweet potato chips, significantly reducing the risk of burning while still achieving a perfectly crisp result. Sweet potatoes have a higher sugar content than regular potatoes, which makes them more prone to burning quickly at higher temperatures. This gentle, slower cooking method allows the chips to dehydrate and crisp up evenly without charring. While each air fryer model can vary slightly, this method has proven to be the most reliable. You can always adjust the cooking time by a minute or two, adding more for extra crispness or less to prevent overcooking. Always monitor your chips, especially during the final minutes, and remember to flip them periodically (every 7-8 minutes) for even cooking. The thickness of your slices will also directly impact the required cooking time – thinner slices will cook faster, while thicker ones will need a bit more time.

How do I store air-fried sweet potato chips?

Once your air fryer sweet potato chips have fully cooled down to room temperature, they can be stored in an airtight container, such as a sealed zip-top bag or a mason jar. Proper cooling is essential, as storing warm chips can create condensation and lead to sogginess. Stored correctly at room temperature, they will maintain their crispness and flavor for up to 2 weeks.

Can I layer the chips in the air fryer basket to save time?

No, for the best results, it is crucial to cook the sweet potato chips in a single layer within your air fryer basket or on the wire rack. Overlapping the slices will prevent the hot air from circulating effectively around each chip. This restriction in airflow will cause the chips to steam rather than crisp up, resulting in a chewy or soggy texture. To achieve that desired crunchy perfection, you will need to cook your chips in multiple batches, ensuring each batch has ample space for air circulation.

Can I use different types of sweet potatoes?

Absolutely! While common orange-fleshed sweet potatoes (like Jewel or Beauregard) are popular for their sweetness and vibrant color, you can experiment with other varieties. Purple sweet potatoes (often called Okinawan or Stokes Purple) can add a striking visual appeal and have a slightly different flavor profile, often nuttier. White sweet potatoes (like Hannah or Japanese) are denser and less sweet, offering a more savory chip. Adjust seasonings to complement the specific sweet potato variety you choose.

My chips aren’t getting crispy, what could be wrong?

Several factors can prevent your chips from reaching maximum crispness. The most common issues are: 1) **Insufficient Drying:** Ensure sweet potato slices are patted completely dry after soaking. Moisture is the enemy of crispiness. 2) **Overcrowding:** If you layer or overlap chips in the air fryer, they will steam instead of fry. Cook in single layers, in batches if necessary. 3) **Uneven Slices:** If slices vary too much in thickness, thinner ones will burn while thicker ones remain soft. Use a mandolin for uniformity. 4) **Too Much Oil:** While some oil is needed, too much can make them greasy and less crispy. A light brush or toss is sufficient. 5) **Temperature/Time:** Ensure your air fryer is preheated and cooking at the correct, lower temperature (250°F) for sweet potatoes to avoid burning before crisping. Adjust time as needed.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes peeled and sliced
  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp coarse salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Optional Seasonings

  • paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder

Things You’ll Need

  • Air fryer
  • Mandolin

Before You Begin

  • You can swap out the vegetable oil with another high-heat oil like avocado, canola, or grapeseed oil.
  • Please note that the thickness of your slices will alter the time needed for them to crisp up. The thinner the slice, the less time they need, and the thicker they are, the longer they will need.
  • Through experimenting, this low-heat method worked the best with the least amount of burning. Keep in mind that each air fryer works a little differently. You can always add more cooking time or use less time to get your perfect chip. Make sure to flip over periodically at 7-8 minutes.

Instructions

  1. Wash and peel the sweet potatoes.
  2. Using a mandolin slicer slice the sweet potatoes on a thin setting. Make sure that the slices have an even thickness on each slice. If the slices are too thin on one side that side will burn before the thicker side cooks.
  3. Soak all of the slices in a large bowl covered with cold water for 20 minutes. This removes some of the starch for a crisper chip.
  4. Thoroughly dry the slices with a towel or paper towels.
  5. Lightly brush the outside of each slice with a light coating of the vegetable oil.
  6. Sprinkle the salt and pepper or other optional spices onto each side of the slices.
  7. Place on the air fryer wire rack or basket and make sure that the slices are not touching each other.
  8. Cook for 7-8 minutes at 250 degrees Fahrenheit and then flip over each chip and cook for another 7-8 minutes. Check at the 5-minute mark for each side to make sure they do not overcook and burn. Remove and serve.

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
