Gather Your Ingredients for Spooky Delights
To create these enchanting Jalapeno Popper Mummies, you’ll need a handful of readily available ingredients. The quality of your ingredients truly shines through in this simple recipe, so opt for fresh and flavorful choices. Here’s a detailed list of what you’ll need to assemble these fun and flavorful treats:

Ingredient Spotlight and Smart Substitutions
Understanding each component and knowing when to make substitutions can elevate your cooking experience and ensure successful results every time.
Jalapenos: Mastering the Heat
Choosing the right jalapenos is key. Look for peppers with a bright green color, firm texture, and a smooth, unblemished surface at the grocery store. The spice level of jalapenos varies greatly, and you have full control over how hot or mild your poppers will be. The capsaicin, which gives jalapenos their heat, is concentrated in the white pith and seeds inside the pepper.
- For a Milder Poppers: To significantly reduce the heat, carefully slice the jalapenos lengthwise, then thoroughly scoop out all the seeds, pith, and white ribs. This essentially “guts” the pepper, leaving mostly the flavorful flesh with minimal spice. Remember to wear gloves when handling jalapenos to avoid skin irritation, especially when removing seeds and ribs.
- For Spicier Poppers: If you love a good kick, leave some or all of the white pith and seeds intact. The more pith and seeds you keep, the hotter your mummy poppers will be.
- Consider Smaller Peppers: For a more appetizer-friendly size or a slightly milder experience, consider using smaller jalapenos or even mini bell peppers for a completely heat-free, kid-friendly version.
The Creamy, Cheesy Filling
The heart of these mummies is their rich and creamy cheese filling. Our recipe calls for a simple yet delicious blend:
- Cream Cheese: Ensure your cream cheese is softened to room temperature before mixing. This makes it much easier to combine with other ingredients, resulting in a smooth, lump-free filling. Full-fat cream cheese offers the best texture and flavor.
- Monterey Jack Cheese: This cheese is chosen for its excellent melting properties and mild, slightly buttery flavor that complements the jalapeno beautifully. Shredded Monterey Jack integrates easily into the cream cheese mixture.
- Seasonings: Garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper are the fundamental spices that enhance the savory profile of the filling. For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a pinch of smoked paprika for a smoky depth or a dash of chili powder for an added earthy spice.
- Substitution Suggestions for Cheese: Feel free to experiment with other shredded cheeses. Sharp cheddar offers a bolder taste, Colby Jack provides a creamy and mild profile, while a three-cheese blend can add complexity. For those who crave even more heat, a sprinkle of Pepper Jack cheese in the filling can really turn up the spice.
- Adding Bacon: For an ultimate flavor upgrade, cooked and crumbled bacon bits can be mixed into the cheese filling for a smoky, savory crunch.
Crafting Your Jalapeno Popper Mummies: A Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these easy steps to bring your adorable, spooky Jalapeno Popper Mummies to life. This visual guide ensures success, turning simple ingredients into a festive Halloween treat. For a concise, printable version with exact measurements and instructions, refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Prepare Your Oven and Baking Sheet: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking tray with aluminum foil for easy cleanup, then lightly spray it with olive oil cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Jalapeno Preparation: Carefully slice each jalapeno lengthwise down the middle. Using a small spoon or melon baller, thoroughly remove all the seeds, and at least partially remove the white pith and ribs. Remember, the more pith and ribs you remove, the milder the popper will be. For a truly mild flavor, ensure all internal white membranes are scraped out.

- Mix the Creamy Filling: In a spacious mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded Monterey Jack cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir these ingredients together until they are well combined and the mixture is smooth and uniform.

- Stuff the Jalapenos: Take a small spoon and generously fill each jalapeno half with the prepared cheese mixture. Ensure the filling is neatly packed and slightly mounded, as this will form the body of your mummy.

- Prepare the Crescent Dough “Bandages”: Unroll the crescent rolls onto a clean surface or cutting board. To create rectangles, gently press together the perforations of two triangles to form one larger rectangle. Repeat this process until you have four rectangles in total. Then, slice each rectangle lengthwise into approximately 10 thin strips, which will serve as your mummy bandages.

- Wrap Your Mummies: Take each cheese-stuffed jalapeno half and wrap it with 2 strips of crescent dough. Start at one end and gently spiral the dough around the pepper, leaving a small gap near the top for where the “eyes” will eventually be placed. Ensure the dough is snug but not overly tight.

- Arrange and Apply Egg Wash: Place the dough-wrapped, cheese-stuffed jalapeno halves onto your prepared baking tray. In a small bowl, whisk one egg with one tablespoon of water to create an egg wash. Lightly brush this mixture over the crescent dough on each mummy. The egg wash will give them a beautiful golden-brown color and a slightly crisp finish.

- Bake to Golden Perfection: Bake the mummies in the preheated oven for approximately 12 minutes, or until the crescent dough is puffed up, golden brown, and cooked through. Keep an eye on them to prevent over-browning.
- Add the Spooky Eyes: Immediately after removing them from the oven, while they are still hot, carefully press two small candy eyeballs into the designated space on each mummy. The residual heat will help them adhere.

- Cool and Serve: Allow the Jalapeno Popper Mummies to cool slightly on the baking tray for a few minutes before transferring them to a serving platter. They are best enjoyed warm, when the cheese is gooey and the dough is flaky.
Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips for Success
Here are some common questions and valuable tips to help you make the best Jalapeno Popper Mummies:
What can I use for mummy eyeballs besides candy?
While candy eyeballs are undeniably cute and add to the festive charm, sometimes a savory alternative is preferred. Sliced black olives are an excellent substitute that complements the savory flavors of the poppers. Simply place two thin slices of black olive in the eye-gap after baking. You could also use small dots of cream cheese with a tiny poppy seed or sesame seed in the center for a minimalist look.
Can I make these Jalapeno Popper Mummies ahead of time?
Absolutely! These mummies are perfect for preparing in advance, which is a huge time-saver when hosting a Halloween party. You can assemble them entirely up to a day before you plan to bake them. Once wrapped, store them in a single layer in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to serve, apply the egg wash right before baking. They’ll bake up perfectly golden and crispy in about 12 minutes, just like freshly made ones. This also makes them ideal for transporting to a friend’s or family member’s home for baking on-site.
Can I freeze these mummies?
You can freeze unbaked jalapeno popper mummies for longer storage. Assemble them fully, but do not apply the egg wash or candy eyeballs. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. When ready to bake, thaw them in the refrigerator overnight, then proceed with the egg wash and baking instructions. Freezing can slightly alter the texture of the jalapenos, but they will still be delicious.
What are the best dipping sauces for Jalapeno Popper Mummies?
These mummies are fantastic on their own, but a delicious dipping sauce can take them to the next level. Classic choices include ranch dressing, blue cheese dressing, or even a simple sour cream dip. For a little extra kick, sriracha mayo or a sweet chili sauce would be excellent complements. A homemade honey-lime crema would also offer a refreshing contrast.
How do I ensure my crescent dough doesn’t unroll during baking?
Make sure to firmly press the ends of the crescent dough strips into the underlying dough to create a secure seal. You can also lightly moisten the ends of the dough with a tiny bit of water to help them stick. Don’t stretch the dough too thin when wrapping, as this can make it more prone to tearing and unrolling.

Serving Suggestions for Your Mummy Feast
These Jalapeno Popper Mummies are the ultimate Halloween appetizer, perfect for any festive occasion. Serve them warm straight from the oven to ensure the cheese is perfectly gooey and the crescent dough is flaky and golden. While they are undeniably best served hot, their delicious flavors still hold up well at room temperature, making them convenient for party buffets.
Arrange them artfully on a large platter, perhaps alongside a bowl of your favorite dipping sauce. They pair wonderfully with other spooky snacks and drinks, adding both charm and flavor to your Halloween spread. Whether it’s a themed party, a family movie night, or a potluck with friends, these mummy poppers are sure to be a conversation starter and a guaranteed hit!

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
